Mayans, Incas, Aztecs, and natives of South and Central America used tagua for emotional and spiritual health and well-being. Tagua is a valuable and highly sought after nut of a family of palm trees native to South America. The meat of the tagua nut has the strength and intelligence of an elephant, thus natives of South America call it vegetable ivory. In Asian cultures, the tree itself is Ganesha, the Remover of All Obstacles. The nut of this sacred tree is a living abode of Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wisdom; in its roots lives Parvati, the Goddess of Fertility; and Durga, the Goddess of Endurance and Virility, dwells in its trunk.
